Cooped-up conversations

conversations.jpg

Good conversations can change the world – and deepen our connections to each other. While many of us are still at home, let's seize the chance to get to know our curious, thoughtful, sage and silly children a little better. With our #coopedupconversations, we're posing a daily series of gently probing questions to ask children – and sharing their responses!

The questions are available in English and Spanish. Please feel free to adapt them to suit your child's age, interests or attention span...

Download your daily prompts here – and please tag @fannyandalexander or #coopedupconversations on Instagram to be part of the project.

Anthropologie | Weave a beautiful basket

weave_basket_fa.jpg

Tuesday 26 May

We're hosting a basket weaving session with our friends @anthropologieeu. We'll show you (and your kids) how to make the beautiful, simple baskets from our book. All you need is some paper, scissors, tape.

As well as producing beautiful, functional objects at the end, the process of weaving is brilliantly meditative, easy to learn and swiftly gratifying. It’s such a universal practice, but it can also prompt consideration for the ways in which cultures and humans throughout time are both distinct and different.

Free printable activities from The Nature of Play

We're sharing a few of our favourite activities from our new book to buoy spirits, happily while away a few hours, and encourage children to roam unconfined around their imaginations. Make a pinhole camera, build your own marble run, bake irresistible alfajores or create a special scene – without leaving the house!

Like all the activities in The Nature of Play, they're simple, seasonal, require little more than curiosity, and provide a precious few minutes of calm enjoyment for children (and brief respite for adults!).

Dye your own Easter eggs

dye-eggs-3.jpg

Egg-dyeing has been around for centuries – it’s still a gentle, magic trick to see them transformed using only scraps of vegetables, water and time. You probably have most of the materials on hand, so you can try it out on any rainy day, though it’s especially sweet at Easter. Try your own experiments, too – use wax crayons to create pictures on your egg’s surface or whatever spices you have in your cup-board. The end product may be pretty, but it’s the playing that’s the point.

Latin American Art Museum of Buenos Aires | Small craft

Organized and curated by Fanny & Alexander

This year the Museum of Latin American Art of Buenos Aires's design initiative devoted to children appointed Delfina Aguilar, founder of Fanny & Alexander, a children's label, as guest curator. The Fanny & Alexander brand offers an array of objects rigorously crafted by artisans from noble materials. From wood-carved toys and hand-knitted jumpers to an interiors line, F&A is committed to enriching the lives of children through beautiful, simple and enduring objects that embody a nostalgic notion of play.

The exhibition seeks to highlight the value of craftsmanship in the production of objects with which children interact daily. Specifically, children will observe the process involved in the craft of soap-making, binding, silk screen printing and knitting.

Children will be able to apply these techniques in a space especially designed for them to engage with the materials first-hand. In this way, the event will be an opportunity to explore ways of playing that are also ways of creating. The goal is to convey, through a playful experience, the idea that craftsmanship is a fundamental part of the value of the finished product.

By encouraging children to experiment with different techniques through which materials are molded into new objects, this project aims to stimulate active forms of play that foster manual skills and exercise imagination and creativity. Fanny & Alexander thus hopes to instill in children the value of enduring objects produced from noble materials through careful craftsmanship while at the same time inspiring parents to keep these value alive.
